What is "Online Affiliate Marketing" about?

By definition, online affiliate marketing is an internet based process (also called "Internet affiliate marketing") where you can earn money by selling someone else's products.

A person (an affiliate) needs to sign up to a business's affiliate program and start advertising or selling their products on their behalf, in exchange of a commission (a commission is a percentage of the product's sale price).

The affiliate has to refer new customers to the business provider. Being a performance-based type of business; the affiliate marketer only gets their commission when their advertisement produces an actual transaction.

To grow their online businesses, many business owners are now willing to pay influential individuals to promote their products to the public and affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to accomplish it.

Online Affiliate Marketing - How Does It Work?

Affiliate marketing generally involves 4 parties:

  1. Affiliate Marketing Merchant
  2.  The Affiliate Marketing Network
  3. Affiliate Marketing Members
  4. . Affiliate Marketing Customers

The merchant (he is the person or company that owns the business, therefore the affiliate program). The affiliate (also referred to as the publisher, he is the person that links the merchant to potential buyers' trough affiliate programs), The affiliate network (intermediary between the merchant's affiliate program and the affiliate), and finally the customer.

Even though it doesn't require the affiliate to have a website, it is undoubtedly recommendable to have one, especially if the affiliate member considers it a long-term project and wants to build his brand.

Now, how does it work?

The merchant who is the primary business owner offers an affiliate program and the publisher or affiliate sign-up on the program. Once he has joined the program; he will freely choose a product to promote and receive a unique affiliate or tracking link.

The affiliate marketer will then share the given link through his blog, social media or as an ad; when someone clicks on the link he posted and make a purchase, the merchant will, therefore, be able to trace the affiliate using the unique tracking link and send him a commission on the sale.

In the case where the affiliate has his website, he needs to sign-up on for a business's affiliate program and get his affiliate link. Whenever the affiliate marketer writes about the business (a personal review for example), he will insert the link to recommend the products to his audience.

If one or more of his readers purchase through the link, he will get the commission.
The affiliate aims to get as many people as possible to click on his link and visit the merchant's page. Thereby, the biggest goal in affiliate marketing is to increase the traffic, get more clicks and consequently more commissions.

Affiliate Marketing Types

There are many diverse ways to earn money from sending traffic to the merchant's website, but we will only focus on three major categories: unattached, related and involved affiliate marketing depending on whether the affiliate uses PPC(Pay per click), is a website's publisher or a blogger.

Type 1. Unattached affiliate marketing

This type of affiliate marketing involves pay per click, pay per install, pay per sign-up, and pay per lead methods. Many affiliates opt for this type of affiliate marketing as it doesn't require owning a website or having a relationship with the merchant or the customer.

The main job of the affiliate marketer is to place an ad on their social media/website and hope that people will click on the tracking link and visit the merchant's website.
These links, which are unique to each affiliate, enables the network affiliate to keep track on the affiliate's performance.

Type 2. Related affiliate marketing

Related affiliate marketing requires a strong online presence whether it is through a blog, a YouTube channel, podcast or any other internet-based form that allows placing links and ads for products.

Since the affiliate already has an audience, all he does is to add offers in forms of ads or link that he knows might interest his audience.

Type 3. Involved affiliate marketing

The main difference between this style and the related affiliate marketing style is that, in the last one, the affiliate isn't familiar with the product he is advertising.
This type refers to affiliate marketers who use the products they promote. If an affiliate has a personal website, blog, podcast with a following wide audience, this method is ideal for the success of his business.

He already has a loyal audience that trusts his judgment and considers all the products you promote as a "must have." At this point, the blogger doesn't even need ad banners; he can include the links to the products in his reviews and conduct his followers to the merchant's landing page.

Compared to other methods, blogging has proven to be the best promotional tool and very useful when it comes to affiliate marketing. However, if the affiliate has a strong social media experience, the PPC methods can be very lucrative.

How To Make Money With Affiliate Marketing?

1. Learn from other successful affiliates

To succeed in the business, the affiliate member will need to gain experience from other affiliate marketers, and join affiliate communities or forums.

The wealthy affiliate, Digital Point, and Warrior Forum are among the best and free resources for beginners to get advice and to connect with more experienced marketers.

My #1 recommendation: Join the wealthy affiliate community.

2. Understand and attract targeted traffic

It is crucial for an affiliate marketer, especially bloggers, to consider his audience member's age, interest, income while writing a review on his website.

When each member is targeted in your review, they will be encouraged to click on the link and buy the same products.

Recommendation: Build an email list, interact with your audience.

3. Invest a lot of time in your Online Business, work hard

Many people view affiliate marketing as a quick-get-rich program that will get you rich very fast and with little effort, but it is entirely untrue.

The marketer has to keep in mind that it is a highly competitive field and that he is not selling his own product.

Recommendation: At least, write 3 posts and Tweet 5 times per week.

In summary, Online affiliate marketing is a passive income potential, and the key to succeeding is how you approach the whole process and how you determine which type you want to go with and how much effort you are ready to put in. Learn How To Get Started Here!
